  • Pour a roof in one go: order all the cement, sand and crush before the day, and keep a few spare bags.
  • Use cement within about 3 months of the date printed on the bag, and store it off the floor, away from damp.
  • Today's rates: cement, sand, crush.

How it works

How cement is worked out

Concrete: length × width × thickness gives the finished volume. Cement, sand and crush shrink when mixed, so the dry materials are 1.54 × that, split by the mix — 1:2:4 is one part cement, two sand, four crush (7 parts). A 50 kg bag is 1.25 cft.

Plaster: area × thickness, × 1.3 for joints, uneven walls and what falls, split by the mix (1:4, 1:6…).

Brick mortar: 30 cft of dry mortar per 100 cft of brickwork. We add 2% to the cement for wastage and round up to whole bags.
