How it's worked out
Good to know
- Soak bricks in water before laying — dry bricks suck the water out of the mortar and the joints stay weak.
- First-class (awwal) bricks are evenly red, ring when struck and have sharp edges; use them for outer walls left exposed.
- 9" outer walls usually take 1:6 mortar; thin 4.5" walls 1:4.
- Today's rates: bricks, cement, sand.
- Building the whole house? The construction cost calculator adds steel, concrete, labour and finishing; the cement calculator does slabs and plaster.

How it works
How bricks are counted
A Pakistani brick is 9" × 4.5" × 3". With the mortar joints, 100 cubic feet of brickwork takes 1,350 bricks and 30 cft of dry mortar — the basis engineers and the PWD analysis of rates use.
Bricks = wall length × height × thickness (in feet) × 13.5, plus 5% for breakage. A 9-inch wall takes about 10.1 bricks per sq ft, a 4.5-inch wall about 5.1.
Mortar: 30 cft dry per 100 cft of brickwork, split by the mix — in 1:6, one part cement and six parts sand. A 50 kg bag of cement is 1.25 cft.
Questions people ask
How many bricks are in 1 sq ft of wall?
About 10.1 bricks in a 9-inch wall and 5.1 in a 4.5-inch wall, counting the mortar joints — then add 5% for breakage.
How many bricks are in 100 cubic feet of brickwork?
1,350 standard Pakistani bricks (9" × 4.5" × 3"), the figure used in the PWD analysis of rates — 13.5 bricks per cubic foot, with 30 cft of dry mortar.
How many bricks does one room need?
A 12 ft × 10 ft room with 9-inch walls 10 ft high, less a door and a window, takes about 4,300 bricks, 11 bags of cement and 78 cft of sand. Rooms built side by side share a wall, so each extra room takes fewer.
How many bricks for the boundary wall of a 5 marla plot?
A 5 marla plot (25' × 45') walled on all four sides, 7 ft high and 9 inches thick with a 10 ft gate, takes about 13,800 bricks including a 2 ft foundation. If the neighbours' walls are already up, you only build the front — far fewer.
How many bricks does a 5 marla house need?
A double-storey 5 marla house (about 2,026 sq ft covered) takes roughly 54,700 bricks — about 27 per sq ft of covered area, including foundations and the boundary wall.
How much cement and sand does brickwork need?
For 1,000 sq ft of 9-inch wall in 1:6 mortar: about 27 bags of cement and 193 cft of sand. 1:4 mortar (stronger, for 4.5" walls) takes more cement.
What is the brick rate today?
First-class (awwal) bricks are about Rs 20,000 per thousand in Lahore today, second-class (doum) about Rs 15,000.
Which wall thickness should I use?
9-inch (one brick) for outer and load-bearing walls, 4.5-inch (half brick) for partitions inside, 13.5-inch for boundary walls and heavy loads.
